Bharat Ratna

There are four top civilian awards given in India.

1. Bharat Ratna
2. Padam Vibhushan
3. Padam Bhushan
4. Padam Shri

Except Bharat Ratna, all other awards are given every year and the list often reaches to 100+ names. Questions are often asked in aptitude exams about these awards. Obviously you are not 'Chitti' of Robot movie, so be selective considering the cost-benefit analysis.

Here I have listed out some important facts regarding Bharat Ratna.
  • Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India. It was instituted in 1954. Its not mandatory to give it every year.
  • It is given in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order in  any field of human endeavour.
  • It's not necessarily given to Indian Citizens. e.g. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Pakistan), Nelson Mandela (South Africa) have also received Bharat Ratna.
  • Youngest person to get Bharat Ratna : Sachin Tendulkar, he is also the first sports-person who got Bharat Ratna.
  •  Prime Minister recommends name for the Bharat Ratna to the President. Maximum 3 persons are nominated per year. Award does not include any monetary benefit.
  • Mahatma Gandhi has not been given Bharat Ratna. (Probably because there is no political benefit in that case.)
